— Care Guide —
Made to handle real life.
Designed to last for years.
Every SofaHug cover is built for kids, cats, spilled coffee, and lazy Sundays. Here's everything you need to wash, dry, refresh, and store yours so it stays soft, snug, and beautiful.
Quick care at a glance
Machine wash cold
Gentle cycle, mild detergent. Wash alone or with similar colors. Skip the fabric softener.
Tumble dry low
Low heat, or air dry flat in shade. Avoid high heat — it shrinks fibers and dulls the color.
No bleach
Chlorine bleach permanently damages most cover fabrics. Use an oxygen-based stain remover instead.
Iron low
Most wrinkles smooth out once the cover drapes on your sofa. Iron only if needed, on low setting.
Step by step: machine wash
-
1Shake off loose debris. Take the cover outside and shake or brush off crumbs, pet hair, and dust before washing.
-
2Pre-treat any visible stains. Dab with cold water and a small amount of mild detergent. Let it sit 5–10 minutes — don't rub, it spreads the stain.
-
3Wash on cold, gentle cycle. Use mild detergent. Wash one cover at a time so it can move freely and rinse fully. No bleach, no fabric softener.
-
4Tumble dry low or air dry flat in shade. Avoid direct sunlight when drying — UV can fade color over time. If using a dryer, throw in two clean tennis balls to keep the fabric fluffy.
-
5Smooth and place back on sofa while slightly damp. The cover will settle into the cushions as it finishes drying — fewer wrinkles, snugger fit.
Living with cats and dogs
Pet hair is the #1 reason people buy a cover — and the #1 question we get. Here's the routine that works.
Lint roller
Run a sticky lint roller across the cover once a day. It picks up fresh hair before it works deep into the fibers.
No-heat dryer cycle
Throw the cover in the dryer on no-heat / air-only for 10 minutes with two tennis balls. Hair falls into the lint trap.
Pet accidents
Blot — don't rub — with paper towel. Spray with a 50/50 mix of cold water and white vinegar, blot dry, then wash on gentle cycle as soon as possible.
Snags & loops
Small loops? Trim flush with sharp scissors. Never pull a snagged thread — it'll unravel the weave. For deep gouges, message us.
Stain removal cheat-sheet
Treat stains within 24 hours when possible. Always blot from the outside of the stain inward to keep it from spreading.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Read your cover's care label before the first wash
- Wash before first use to soften the fabric
- Wash regularly — fortnightly for everyday use, monthly otherwise
- Air dry in shade for richer color retention
- Rotate your cover seasonally if you own multiple
Don't
- Use chlorine bleach or harsh stain removers
- Use fabric softener — it coats the fibers and reduces grip on the sofa
- Dry clean unless explicitly listed on the care label
- Iron directly on prints or embroidery — use a pressing cloth
- Store damp — always fully dry before folding away
Storing between seasons
Wash and fully dry the cover first — dampness causes mildew.
Fold loosely, don't crease tightly. Tight folds leave permanent lines.
Store in a breathable cotton bag — not plastic — in a cool, dry place.
Add a sachet of cedar or lavender to deter moths.
Air the cover for an hour before putting it back on the sofa.
